If you are a small business owner in 2020, you have likely experienced a number of setbacks in your business this year. Whether you have been hit with supply chain issues, been forced to close your doors in your brick and mortar location, or simply spent the year searching for the right audience for your product in the COVID-19 world, 2020 has probably not been kind to your bottom line.
Regardless of your particular dilemma, you are in good company. Small businesses are closing left and right due to a lack of e-commerceability (yes, I just made up a word), in their current business plan. That’s the bad news. The good news is that virtual commerce is expanding daily. If you don’t believe me, just check the headlines: Amazon, Walmart, and eBay are doing booming business (Etsy is doing pretty well too). Content sites such as Netlfix, Disney+, Amazon Prime, and Hulu are reporting record earnings. So what does that have to do with you and your business?
First of all, let’s look at where this success is coming from. The main reason these businesses are doing so well during COVID-19 is not simply that they are offering products in a format that maintains social distancing – they were already doing that before anyone had heard of the ‘rona. The reason these companies are drastically exceeding their quarterly projections for 2020 is because they know exactly where their audience is and how to reach them.

Identifying and directly reaching your audience doesn’t have to be a great mystery reserved only for Fortune 500 Companies. Social media platforms (using FaceBook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, Google AdWords, etc.), allow you to address your advertising directly to your ideal audience and to optimize (or refine) your targeting to get you the results you are looking for in your business.
Around the world the percentage of social media users increases annually and the amount of time those users spend online each day also increases. Those increases occur across racial, gender, age, religion, and income brackets. While online, people are chatting, consuming news, viewing entertainment, looking for solutions to problems, and shopping!
